    Lost sound and internet suddenly

I was on Facebook with no problems. Left there and went to play SuperTuxCarts and it wouldn't load: just kept going back to desktop. I rebooted and STK loaded just fine, but no sound. Going into ALSA mixer my output was listed as Dummy Output. I then booted into Win10 and sound and internet worked fine. Rebooted into Xubuntu 20.04 and still no sound or internet.

I then rebooted into Xubuntu and tried the repair thingy before booting (I can't remember the exact name because of senior moment) and let it run. Still no good. Rebooted again. Newest kernel was 58.0-36. i chose 54.0-60 and booted into that and everything works fine. What now?

Just tried that.....no good. Next boot it went to 5.8.0-36. I just now had to boot into 5.4.0-60 to get sound and internet back.

It looks as if there has been another 5.8.0-38 kernel released today, so try that and you may find that all is well again; this kernel version has arrived only a few days after the "broken" 5.8.0-36.

With luck this one will work as expected rather than give so many users difficulties of many kinds.

Re: Lost sound and internet suddenly

How do I pick what kernel to upgrade to? I tried updating earlier and only had the 58.0-36 as the newest.

And how do I keep it right now from booting into 5.8.0-36 until then?

How do I get rid of the 5.8 kernels? I cannot use any of them and I have to manually choose the 5.4 kernel. Also, how do I get rid of some of the older kernels?

Re: Lost sound and internet suddenly

You can clean that up with
    Code:
    sudo dpkg -P `dpkg -l | grep linux-image | grep ^rc | awk {'print $2'}`

I'd run "sudo apt autoremove" first, if you haven't done so recently.

That is a lot better, but it still wants to boot the 58 kernel which leaves me without sound and internet. How can I stop that?
