    broken dual-boot grub config

    Hi there,

    I have a ubuntu 20.04 upgraded from 18.04 running on a UEFI-only Njoy Aerial laptop (some cheap chinease oem) and a few months ago - most likely before 20.04 upgrade my dual-boot broke.
    Initially I've used reFIND but that one broke and never got a proper fix.
    Then I've configured grub for my dual-boot needs (windows 10 home included license) but that started to brake after each kernel upgrade.
    The only fix is to run boot-repair tool after every update that triggers grub.
    Here is the last pastebin generated by the tool https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Fftjk2w2yG/

    thanks for any hint !

    Line 9 - Windows is hibernated
    Line 19 - Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting.)

    Windows update often turns on Fast Start Up even when previously de-activated.

    Line 75 - OS#1: The OS now in use - Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS CurrentSession on mmcblk1p2

    This indicates that you have booted successfully into Ubuntu.

    I think that you need to add more information:-

    What are you trying to do?
    What do you expect to happen?
    What actually happens?
    Any error reports?

    Re: broken dual-boot grub config

    What are you trying to do?
    run a dual-boot config - ubuntu 20.04 and windows 10 home x64
    What do you expect to happen?
    grub to show menu with boot by default windows10 and offer ubuntu as an option - as configured in the pastebin https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/D3Yb78rhWp/
    What actually happens?
    ubuntu boot by default and no grub menu is displayed after i run `initramfs-update`
    Any error reports?
    just run again `initramfs-update` and `update-grub2` and generated a new pastebin https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/9nDJPr82Wn/ and can't see any error
    ...
    and this is the pastebin after repairing my grub config via `boot-repair` https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/BBc8WK6bYp/

    Re: broken dual-boot grub config

    I think the first thing to do is to try and make grub appear when you power on.

    Can you edit grub as follows:-
    Code:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    #GRUB_TERMINAL="console"
    #GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="false
    Then run:-
    Code:
    sudo update-grub

    Re: broken dual-boot grub config

    That's a bit disappointing, but there must be an answer somewhere.

    Before any more tinkering, can you confirm that you can boot into both Ubuntu and Windows 10 via UEFI boot menu?
    Secondly, you have back-ups of both Windows and Ubuntu data?

    In your post#1 you wrote ..
    Initially I've used reFIND but that one broke and never got a proper fix.

    And indeed the remnants of rEFInd are seen in latest boot repair report.

    You also wrote ..

    I am in dualboot mode and I can either use classic grub menu or rEFInd.

    I make one suggestion.
    That you attempt another install of rEFInd and try booting into rEFInd menu which should allow you to choose between Windows or Ubuntu or others.
