Why do you want to mount the ISO? If you want to make a bootable USB stick or CD/DVD then you don't need to do this
And if you want to use it for a virtual machine you don't need to mount it either.

I basically want to create a bootable disc to put in a very old PC to install Ubuntu.
Followed the instructions to do with a USB stick and it totally corrupted the stick. I can't even erase the thing.
Tried to burn a DVD and found out my Superdrive is dead.
This is turning out to be way too much effort to get a simple install on a machine.

And, of course, make sure the downloaded file isn't itself corrupt before trying again.
Okay so I resolved this by getting a new DVD burner and doing a direct burn of the DVD from the ISO image. This works. However installing Ubuntu the graphics are completely wonky. Lots of triangles. I will post this issue in a new thread.
