When I first assembled a desktop PC to run with Linux, some 12 years ago, I've put in a Radeon graphic card, don't even remember the model any more. My god, that thing was horrible, all sorts of problems, freezing, drivers were just awful. Changed it with Nvidia GeForce 7500 Ti and never looked back.

But what's the situation these days? New generation of GPUs are coming to the market and I don't want to limit my options if there is no longer a good reason for that. Are drivers better now? What the situation with gaming, Proton? Please share your experiences, especially if you're running systems with cards from both camps.
