I'm using the 20.04 LTS release of xubuntu. Today I noticed the lower half of the screen extends further than it should, resulting in weird UI issues. Is this a common issue or is there a known solution?

Read about 14.04 ESM and Puppet inside of Docker Containers.
You may try changing the resolution on the display.

Check that xrandr run in terminal shows the exact same resolution as the native resolution of your monitor or screen

Loose or failed/failing video cable would be my first guess. Check connections. Try another cable.
Is this a laptop or desktop with separate monitor?
If a laptop have you a monitor you can attach it to and check the resolution you get for that.
