Post 20.04: Loading stuck before Grub after recent update

    Laptop ASUS N552VW

    Code:
    sudo dmidecode -s bios-version
    N552VW.304
    Ubuntu 20.04:

    Code:
    lsb_release -a
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
    Release: 20.04
    Codename: focal
    Kernel:

    Code:
    uname -a
    Linux n552vw 5.4.0-47-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 4 19:50:52 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
After updating to 5.4.0-45 getting this problem:

    1. Laptop is switched off.
    2. Pressing the power button.
    3. ASUS logo appears.
    4. Loading stuck.

    The current work-around is to:

    1. Press-hold the power button.
    2. Laptop turns off.
    3. Press power button
    4. Grub menu appears, select "Ubuntu"
    5. The OS loads as usual.

This started to happen after an update about a week ago 5.40.0-45. There was a kernel and some grub update.

The problem happens randomly. Some times it does, some times it does not.
The loading seems to stuck completely - it would not react on any keys pressed (including Ctrl+Alt+Fn).

Any clues how to diagnose this? I really think it was this recent grub update, any clues how to revert/diagnose this?

    ---

I really think the problem arised after this update:

Re: 20.04: Loading stuck before Grub after recent update

Did you install the nVidia driver for your version?

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.modeset=0"
You normally then do not use nomodeset as permanent setting. That is only needed until you install correct nVidia driver and may interfere with boot if you still add it. Normally you just manually add it when booting the first time or until you install the nVidia driver.

    #What is installed
    dkms status

Re: 20.04: Loading stuck before Grub after recent update

The nvidia driver is installed, using tested proprietary one:

Removed "nouveau.modeset=0". Added it earlier because of other problem (where the laptop would not come back from sleep). Going to see if that helps.

Re: 20.04: Loading stuck before Grub after recent update

I have reverted this package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source...04-1ubuntu26.3

To the version 2.04-1ubuntu26.2 and now my system loads fine as before.

Questions: should I report this as a bug? What would be the appropriate steps to report this correctly?

For now I have put the grub package updates on hold. I am not sure if the devs are aware there are possible problems with the package. I don't want to skip all the future grub updates because of this.

Re: 20.04: Loading stuck before Grub after recent update

If you report a bug they want lots of details.
Many bugs get auto reported on crash and then all the logs & errors are uploaded.

First check if any reported bugs are similar. Sort by number will be most recent.
