Can't drop files directly on the desktop

Hi there, I am running Ubuntu 20,04. On my desktop I have a program launche shortcut, and to make it work I need to drag and drop files on it. The problem is that Ubuntu doesn't let me to drag and drop files on the desktop....why? How can I solve this?

    Does it work if you

    - open two windows of Files (the file browser nautilus)
    - change directory of one of the windows to the Desktop
    - move or copy a file from into the window of Files at Desktop?

When I do that, the file will appear on the desktop screen. But i don't know if this is enough for your application program to work, I am only guessing that it might work.

Sounds like you use gnome3. The developers for that system don't think you need that so it isn't possible.
Fortunately, we have choices in Linux for the gui we run. There are 50+ different GUIs. 20 are popular. Pick whichever GUI you like. No need to load a new OS, just install the GUI.

To prevent the settings of different GUIs from colliding, just create a new userid for each GUI you want to try out, then log out, on the login page, pick the other GUI, then login and see if the new GUI works for your desires. Pretty simple, just a little time.
