Broke down and bought 30 meters of cat6 cable, thanks anyways folks
Your solution may not be the least costly or most convenient but it will be in all likelihood the most trouble free and fastest. I'm using a MoCA 2.0 solution for wired ethernet, our house has cable outlets conveniently located. WiFi adapters can be frustrating in Linux as you found. I haven't needed to purchase one in years, my laptops have Intel wifi which is plug-n-play. I do have some 2.4 Ghz. adapters that still work if I need one.
Please run the wireless script from the sticky thread and show the output.

I know of no way to get this device working in any current; that is, not end-of-life kernel version. I regret that I haven't a better answer.
