Exclamation 20.04 live usb on desktop, black screen freeze after grub menu

    Hi,

I own an Asus Pro Art PA90 station, and I tried to boot on a Ubuntu 20 USB Key, I get the Grub menu. After the pressing enter, the screen is just black. Nothing, no log, nothing. Everything is freeze.

Even with the compatiblity (recovery) option, this is the same. Black, without anything.

Fast boot, and Secure boot are disabled. AHCI and EFI activated (no legacy).

Note : This key is working great on my laptop.

I tried with Ubuntu 18.04 and this is booting. But after installing on disk, and upgrading to Ubuntu 20, the installation do not boot anymore, like the USB Key, freezing after "Loading initial ramdisk"

I tryied to "nomodset" option without any success. Try with "nouveau.noaccel=1" instead of "nomodeset". Try with "noapic noacpi nosplash irqpoll" instead of "quiet splash".

I update the Bios firmware to the last version, but do not help

Re: 20.04 live usb on desktop, black screen freeze after grub menu

Your i9-9900K has an Intel GPU as well. If you don't plan to use this, can you disable it in the BIOS at all. This may help

The Bios do not allow me to desactivate the Intel GPU Only Internal Wifi and Bluetooth.

Re: 20.04 live usb on desktop, black screen freeze after grub menu

I changed the configuration in the Bios, to activate "CSM (Compatiblity Support Module)" in Asus Bios.
It allow "UEFI and Legacy OPROM", so now I can choose to boot the key in both mode, and the key is booting in Legacy.

If I try to boot if in UEFI mode, not I get this error during the initrd command :

    error: out of memory

    Press enter to continue ...

And then the kernel crash "Unable to mount root"

Re: 20.04 live usb on desktop, black screen freeze after grub menu

Update 3 : I succeed to boot, with a strange way for working. I have 2 grub : one from Ubuntu 19, and one with Ubuntu 20.

I boot on Ubuntu 19 key (Grub 2.02), type "c" for Grub command, and type :

    set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
    set root=(hd0,gpt2)
    insmod linux
    insmod normal
    normal

Then I get the Ubuntu 20 menu, and select to start Ubuntu in recovery mode

    And it works !

If I try to boot directly on the Ubuntu 20 key (Grub 2.04), I get the menu, but even with recovery mode, it crash.

Is it an issue with Grub ? How I can force (downgrade ?) the grub version ?

    Thanks

Re: 20.04 live usb on desktop, black screen freeze after grub menu

I found that the issue was from new Grub 2.04, because I succeed to boot on my system with a Grub 2.02 on a live key.

And after, I revert the grub from 2.04 to 2.02

    I found the package here : https://pkgs.org/search/?q=grub

    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...8.15_amd64.deb
    wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo..._0.7_amd64.deb
    # remove current Grub 2.04
    sudo apt-get purge grub-gfxpayload-lists grub-pc-bin grub2-common grub-pc grub-efi-amd64-signed shim-signed
    # install Grub 2.02
    sudo dpkg -i *.deb

    then

    grub-install /dev/sda

    update-grub

My system boot in with the "fail safe" option
