Is it possible to install a BIOS update from an .exe file?

My dad has asked me to do a fresh-install of Ubuntu (he had 19.10 on there previously). Before I do this, however, he needed me to do a complete BIOS upgrade, as recommended by his laptop's manufacturer. The only trouble is, is that they've sent a link which contains a .exe file, as they only provide BIOS updates for Windows. We're both not happy about this, obviously.

While he's trying to sort out the manufacturer, in the meanwhile I've been trying to find out how I am able to install this update. Haven't found anything suitable, thus far. What's the recommended way to do this, if any?

UEFI can update itself. Even the ancient BIOS was updated from DOS/FreeDOS rather than Windows. Don't assume from the name what the process is.

There are ways of doing it with Linux, usually installing FreeDOS on USB stick. I think the easiest way is just to install windows on a partition(temp if not wanted) and do the bios update, usually just a couple clicks. Bios updates usually tested for windows only to work well.

Most new UEFI can update directly from UEFI reading the update file on a FAT32 formatted partition. I use my ESP, since FAT32 & I made it larger. And most vendors also have that file as a download.
You may be able to extract update file with 7zip or similar from the .exe.
HP UEFI update - extract .bin from .exe file and copy into FAT32 partition.

Some very new systems now support UEFI update from Linux. Even if vendor still says they do not support Linux. Dell seems to have been one of the first to offer updates on many systems and Lenovo is now adding more of its new systems.

In my experience you generally don't need to even need to do that; just point the UEFI at the file and it does the rest itself.
None but ourselves can free our minds

How would that work, if I don't have to download anything?

Will have to put that by him, as he doesn't really want 10 on there!

How would I do that? BIOS is not something I generally mess about with (I'm not that technical enough).

Depends on the BIOS. What is the laptop model?
