Question 20.04 - Old Apple MacBook - Boot Takes Over 1.5 Minutes?

    Hi,

Fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64Bit onto an old Apple MacBook notebook.
Booting the MacBook to Ubuntu desktop takes over 1.5 minutes?

    Any ideas?, thanks.

If it has a HDD then I would say not bad, at all.
Users of old hardware should set their expectations accordingly.

Yep, with HDD that sounds about right. Consider installing an SSD instead, that should reduce it to around 1/4 of that.

If not using snaps then snapd probably can but that's not the issue. The hardware is. Please note that a 10 years old Macbook roughly compares to a 12 years old PC. And, again, nowadays a HDD is the main bottleneck, next is little and slower RAM.

I was able to mask accounts-daemon, ModemManager, avahi-daemon, and bluetooth with no issue. I'm still running long, but I suspect it's what everyone else is saying about still running with an HDD.

When you boot do you see a screen enabling you to select different options, or is the screen blank for a lengthy period of time?

Older Macs have a 32-bit EFI and your linux install is 64 bit. This can cause issues.

Re: 20.04 - Old Apple MacBook - Boot Takes Over 1.5 Minutes?

I installed on a MBP 5,5. with the original config of 160Gb HDD and a 2Gb ram. The boot time was a miserable 4 min. After a 120Gb SSD upgrade and upgrading the Ram to 4Gb its a fairly acceptable 50 seconds. So 1.5 min is a fairly okay time.
