DVDs and VLC

I've tried to play three old DVDs earlier and am wondering whether I've got to change settings on VLC? The first part of the title plays fine, but when I chose the episode I wanted I end up with the following; green areas, black blocks and the picture not playing properly.

Other DVDs that I've played yesterday have played fine.

on a side note , i have switched to SMPlayer after years of VLC use...

Thanks for that! I've tried changing the settings on VLC and it didn't make any difference.

I installed SMPlayer and it worked straight away The only thing that made me jump was that it defaulted to German!!! I nearly feel off my chair, I haven't heard anyone speaking German for a long time.
