    Question [20.04] Ubuntu Software Removed

    Hi All

    Ubuntu Software has disappeared and been replaced with the Snap Store. However, the Snap Store only shows currently installed snaps and not any applications that I have added manually. Is it possible to re-install Ubuntu Software as I didn't see it listed in the Snap Store?

    If you install synaptic does it help?

    Hi ActionParsnip

    Thanks for the quick reply. Will Synaptic allow me to re-install Ubuntu Software or is this to be used as a replacement?

    In 20.04, the package ubuntu-software is a transitional package which installs gnome-software. Or you could install gnome-software directly. The software store icon now will be labeled 'Software'.

    Ubuntu Software has now re-appeared in my list (weird) so Software (gnome-software) can be uninstalled.

    Did you install the ubuntu-software package? Then you have to keep gnome-software, since it's a dependency.

    Code:
    dmn@Tyana-vm:~$ apt depends ubuntu-software
    ubuntu-software
      Depends: gnome-software (>= 3.36.0-0ubuntu3)

    No, it just re-appeared in my list of installed software. I tried uninstalling Software but the icon disappeared after uninstalling gnome-software. Should I reinstall gnome-software as Ubuntu Software is loading and able to install apps?

    What icon disappeared? 'Software' or 'Ubuntu Software'?

    Check which packages are installed:
    For ubuntu-software,
    Code:
    dmn@Tyana-vm:/usr/share/applications$ dpkg --list ubuntu-software
    Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
    | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
    |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
    ||/ Name            Version         Architecture Description
    +++-===============-===============-============-=================================
    ii ubuntu-software 3.36.0-0ubuntu3 all transitional dummy package
    and for gnome-software,

    Code:
    dmn@Tyana-vm:/usr/share/applications$ dpkg --list gnome-software
    Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
    | Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
    |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
    ||/ Name           Version         Architecture Description
    +++-==============-===============-============-=================================
    ii gnome-software 3.36.0-0ubuntu3 amd64 Software Center for GNOME
    The second 'i' at the start of the red lines is the status. 'i' means installed. So I have both installed here. But, on this computer, I don't see 'Ubuntu Software' in applications because ubuntu-software doesn't have a .desktop file (none that I could see).

    If I attempt to remove gnome-software this simulation (-s option) reveals what gets removed:

    Code:
    dmn@Tyana-vm:~$ apt-get remove -s gnome-software | grep -i rem
    Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.
    The following packages will be REMOVED:
    0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 37 not upgraded.
    Remv ubuntu-software [3.36.0-0ubuntu3]
    Remv gnome-software-plugin-flatpak [3.36.0-0ubuntu3]
    Remv gnome-software [3.36.0-0ubuntu3] [gnome-software-plugin-snap:amd64 ]
    Remv gnome-software-plugin-snap [3.36.0-0ubuntu3]
    The current version of the snap package 'snap-store' only manages snap packages. Latest stable version:
    Code:
    dmn@Sydney-vm:~$ snap info snap-store | grep installed
    installed:          3.31.1+git187.84b64e0b            (415) 45MB -

    Re: Ubuntu Software Removed

    Ubuntu Software disappeared and that was when I noticed the Snap Store. At the moment, Ubuntu Software (orange icon) is showing in the app list but the output from those commands shows gnome-software.

    EDIT: Now the Snap Store icon has disappeared, although it is showing as installed in Ubuntu Software.
