reinstall what?! reinstall libpng is impossible. reinstall my entire Ubuntu version or an updated one - maybe in half a year...I'll be homeless from a few weeks from now until then..and no assurance of even being alive at that end of half a year.Originally Posted by webaake

Can anyone translate into which package or repository they mean, below, when they state "it seems that you are not using a software
package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories" I don't understand what they mean. Where does the 'official' libpng come from - or is it everywhere broken?

A fresh install of Ubuntu is the quick and easy solution. It takes about an hour (a bit more if you have to download the live disk over a slow connection). You will loose some arcane software, but a system that just works is incompatible with having arcane software. If you really want software that hasn't been built for your version of Ubuntu, you have to jump through some hoops. It's not easy.
Your problem is caused by having two incompatible versions of the same package, one 32 bit, the other 64 bit. It's supposed to be possible to have both the 32 bit and the 64 bit version of a library installed at the same time, but when only using software from the official sources there should never be a need to do so.
If I were to attempt to fix this, my approach would be to remove every package depending on the 32 bit libpng, then the 32 bit libpng itself, then upgrade the 64 bit libpng, then reinstall the removed packages. But I wouldn't attempt to fix it; I would perform a fresh install.

I would just love to remove all 32 bit packages...but the computer will not allow [I can't make it!]. If you can tell me how to do so, please do! This 'it only takes an hour' doesn't cut it for me. Everytime I have tried to upgrade it was days or weeks of struggle and then I had two computers - so I always had one to be online for help with. Now, the other computer is seized [as is most of my life]....too complex to go into and doesn't apply here. My life is not normal and I'm going to have to move from where I am now in an unknown but few days...I must wait until my life is stable to even think of installing 20.04. The problems of bringing over all the programs I want, making it Gnome desktop and looking as I am used to, making it work with some older hardware and some other factors is just too risky now. I appreciate the 'suggestion' and it is logical for someone with a normal life. I am not such a person. I'm on the move, involuntarily, for being a whistleblower. While I have never looked at these packages before, they must have been there for years. Why all of a sudden are these three conflicting with one another and I see [posted above] this is a known bug, but nothing has yet been done with it. When I next get money, I will get a laptop - have only this too large desktop and intstall on it a new 20.04...not before then and some stability where I don't have to be packed and ready to move on 48 hr. notice.

Yesterday there was another thread with a similar problem (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2446898), this time with libjpeg-turbo8. The problem isn't actually with libpng, but with the way apt handles upgrades of packages that are installed in two different architectures.
Still, I stand by my suggestion. A fresh install is the quick and simple solution. If the simplest solution is too complex, there is no solution. Sorry.
Last Sunday I installed Xubuntu 20.04. I booted the live disk at 19:15, changed some partitions, installed and was running the new system at 20:00. Installing Ubuntu is simpler than fixing it, yet you want to fix it because installing is too complex. That doesn't add up.

You can not see the World from another person's point of view - only your own. Your 'solution/suggestion' is right for you [and perhaps many others]; but too dangerous and problematic for me now. Yes, for now I want to fix this install. I don't want to list why for me your solution is dangerous for me - it just is - I know from the past and then as I said I had another computer. Now, I only have one and if it gets messed up, I'll not even be able to get online for help...nor do I have the time. I could have to move [to homelessness, or a perhaps a place with no internet at best] at any moment without much warning. You just refuse to get it - how it is for me. I have many programs other than those that come with a normal distribution and need to make many changes after. I've always had great problems with a new install and won't chance it now. It does add up and you'r wasting both of our times in discussing it. Many people just install a new version and use it with very little additional done. I must do a huge amount of changes and adding both programs/changes and data. Last time was a week long nightmare and my life was not at the brink as now. You'll not convince me to take this risk at this point. If anyone knows a way to fix my system to limp along until my life is somewhat secure, I'd appreciate it. If not, the system is still working, but I can't update some programs and packages and will just have to live with that for now. I spend all day every day writing legal briefs and doing emergency things. I can NOT afford my system down for a day or a week...it would literally kill me. Thanks, but no thanks. My situation is unusual..but it is what it is.
