    Recording Screen with ffmpeg - error

    Trying to record screen with ffmpeg. Can't seem to figure it out.

    Code:
    $ ffmpeg -y -f alsa -i hw:0 -f x11grab -framerate 30 -video_size 1600x900 -i :0.0+0,0 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -qp 0 -preset ultrafast moetoVideo.avi

    Re: Recording Screen with ffmpeg - error

    I can not get your command to work either, mine giving a final error
    Code:
    [alsa @ 0x560bc4350980] cannot open audio device hw:0 (No such file or directory)
    hw:0: Input/output error
    Unfortunately my code skills are not good enough to figure out what is wrong with your command.

    I do, however, have two commannds which both work fine; the first has no sound recorded, the second does have sound, though I have not been able to test that at the moment. Try these and see if they are any use to you
    Code:
    ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1440x900 -r 15 -i :0.0 -s 720x450 -r 15 -qscale 0 Desktop/video.avi
    ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -acodec flac -vcodec libx264 -threads 0 ./Desktop/mydesktop.mkv
    You will probably need to amend the resolution figures in these to suit your own case, so I wll have to leave that to you to figure out.
    Note also that the first command records the whole desktop @1440x900, but then reduces the output to half that, ie, 720x450.

    Good luck; I hope this is useful.

    Thanks!

    Tried the second one with sound and I got the following error:

    Code:
    $ ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -acodec flac -vcodec libx264 -threads 0 ./Desktop/mydesktop.mkv

    What about the other command; did that work even if silent?

    Can I also check whether you are using an xorg or a wayland session, as I suspect those commands will not work if using wayland because there will be no x11 to grab, though I have almost no knowledge of wayland so far so can't be sure.

    if its just a screen recorder you're looking for ,why not try Kazam? it's pretty straight forward

    Re: Recording Screen with ffmpeg - error

    There's also simplescreenrecorder which is now in the repos for 20.04. It's in the universe repos which I think you may need to enable in software sources if you're using Ubuntu.

    Re: Recording Screen with ffmpeg - error

    Should be able to use x11grab in wayland, at least is ok in 20.04, don't have wayland available in my 18.04.
    Run this to see if display is :0, if not then adjust command.
    Code:
    echo $DISPLAY
