Looking to research components for building a new machine from scratch

After years of fixing up old machines (like the one I'm typing this on), I'm looking to construct a new machine from scratch, something I haven't done in quite a while. I plan to run multimedia applications and maybe a virtual machine on it.

What are good web sites to research hardware on (apart from the obvious Tom's and Cnet)? What should I look for? What should I watch out for?

    Thank you in advance.

If not gaming I would prefer Intel based solutions with the CPU integrated GPU. Then it's only a matter of selecting a motherboard with proper support for virtualization.

I liked pcpart picker. Did not use suggested vendors as I ordered everything from one.
But it saved me from ordering the wrong drive. I was building a SFF system and picked a standard 3.5" drive. It said I needed a laptop type since case was smaller.

You can also see others with similar builds and estimates of prices.

I regularly read this site to see comparisions and whats new.

And that has a test site where users post results based on their system.

What exactly should I look for as regards virtualization?

You should look for virtualization support, something that is usually mentioned in the overview/specifications and details for enabling/disabling and other tweaks should be detailed in the user's manual.
