I had a funny thought a few years ago I don't think I ever saw come to fruition. We all know the old Windows versions were based on DOS. From what I researched a few years ago, I saw some people stuck GEM on FreeDOS and made kind of a reconstruction of what we might've seen in the 90s.

Has anyone taken FreeDOS and (without a Linux compatibility layer) managed to make a modern desktop out of it? Something a bit more advanced than the Windows 3.1 that we see with GEM?

It's just something I thought might be fun to stick in a VM and play around with. Does it exist?
