hd may be failing - need help with analysis

    Hello lads and ladettes

my hd seems to be going down the drain. I performed a test with smartctl but I'm having difficulties to understand all the data. Can someone help? Here's the output:
    Many thanks in advance!

Someone higher on the payscale will come along that knows a little more than I do, but I don't see anything major wrong. Realize that a passed test does not mean that there aren't problems. it just means that they didn't occur during the test.

What exactly is happening that makes you suspect a HDD problem?

Several odd problems including (I believe) read/write errors during the startup-sequence.

How much is your data worth? more than $40? if so, buy a replacement disk. Regardless, have the backups you need, now.

There are some funny things in the output. SMART data doesn't always show clear failures before death. 22% of the time, disks fail w/o any warning.

Do you get the same errors if you boot a LiveUSB?

Seagate doesn't make their SMART data easy to read. This might explain some of the odd things you see: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD..._RRER_HEC.html

I usually don't recommend throwing money at problems, but replacing a 160GB PATA disk with a similar or larger SATA SSD would be well worth the $ to me, especially if I was using it for a boot/system disk. It will be much faster (and quieter).

If indeed the existing disk is PATA as it appears, commonly available SATA SSDs don't work. OP would need a PATA SSD. The largest PATA SSD I could find on Amazon is 128 GB. and cost $84. They make PATA/SATA converters but 1) I don't know if they would work, particularly would they work as a boot device 2) they wouldn't work/fit in laptops. Probably be easier/cheaper to find a PATA mechanical hard drive.
