I'm a longtime user of Ubuntu and used Slackware for some time before that. I am not a total noob, but this one has me stumped.
I have no sound coming from my (Dell Inspiron) laptop speakers. They just up and quit recently. I have checked Alsamixer and nothing is muted. Furthermore, Pavucontrol shows that sound is being sent to the sound card (the meters are jumping in time with the music I'm not hearing). There is no sound from the headphone jack either. I can play sounds on a bluetooth speaker as normal.
Seems like a hardware issue, so I booted a new Ubuntu install USB stick. Sound worked normally.
I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04 to see if that would magically fix things. It did not.
Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to install a new system. I have made a number of changes over the years and am not keen on tracking them all down. Thanks.
