Re: What FREE programs are good for making diagrams on Ubuntu?

    dia.
    vim.
    libreoffice.

Just depends on what you need. Google would provide a list https://www.tecmint.com/best-flowcha...are-for-linux/ . alternativeto.net can provide a list. Do a little research first, share what you think you learned.

I use vim and tree a bunch. https://www.thegeekstuff.com/2009/12...ide-text-file/ which I've not used. Thanks for asking this question. In 2 minutes, I found something new to try.

Update: been playing with both boxdraw and DrawIt.vba.gz vim addons. boxdraw comes with a nice perl script to convert
    Code:
        +-----+
        | |
        | |
        +-----+
    into
    Code:
        ┌─────┐
        │ │
        │ │
        └─────┘
I did have to hack the perl (2 lines), since the author was a Windows user.
DrawIt.vba.gz uses a drawing mode with arrows, shift-arrows, etc. to make shapes and connectors. The hjkl keys have to be used for moving the cursor without drawing - as any good vi/vim user would do anyway. Using visual-mode, boxes/rectangles/ovals of any size can be created.

I have used Inkscape for genealogy charts, flow charts, organizational diagrams.

Not sure what kind of diagrams you are talking about.

There is the violet uml editor.

Inkscape is very good for vector diagrams. (similar to Adobe illustrator)
Gimp for bitmap image manipulation and drawing (photoshop ish)
Been using LibreCAD for detailed architectural and mechanical drawings (wish there was something better -- suggestions?)
