Ubuntu 18.04 no longer boots to desktop

I don't know what happened. I went to boot up my virtual machine and I see it start to boot to the desktop (I see the purple splash color), then it immediately switches over to the terminal

I heard something about trying to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, but I can't do that because I also no longer have a network connection. The only network device I see is the loopback.

Moved to Virtualisation for a better fit.
