Are you asking about standard Ubuntu desktop or one of the Ubuntu community flavours (Kubuntu, Lubuntu ... Xubuntu)?

What do you mean by lighter? Use of CPU, GPU, RAM, Size of iso file, use of drive space when installed?

Gnome finally runs smoother, but I don't think there's that much difference to 18.04 otherwise.

I would say Ubuntu 20.04 given the improvements the GNOME developers have made to it since its previous iteration from 18.04. On idle, it runs around 500 MB as opposed to 700 MB previously.

Lighter? Not significantly IME though I guess it depends on how you define 'lighter'. 20.04 does seem to work better with newer hardware e.g. Ryzen. For 'lighter' I'd recommend looking at different 'flavors' like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, LXDE, Budgie etc.

I have 18.04 and 20.04 on DVD. Both DVDs weigh the same.
