Tried to install 20.04 over 13.10. It crashed. Help please

Greetings all. Total NOOB to Linux here, so please be patient. Thank you.

One of my computers had Ubuntu 13.10, but I tried to update it to 20.04 last night. It didn't go well at all. The installer crashed and I can't even get the machine to attempt to reinstall the new software.

I'm reading the tea leaves and it seems to me that upgrading from 13.10 to 20.04 is some bad bad juju...

After several tries, I just don't care anymore... there's nothing I wanted to save on the hard drive, so what if I just reformat the drive, then start over booting with the flash drive?

Kind of the nuclear option, but I don't want dual boots, partitions or what all anyway. Just a clean machine with 20.04.

Am I on the right track or the wrong one?

Did you remove the partitions that made up 13.10, then make new partitions for 20.04?

You cannot upgrade from 13.10 to 20.04 in one jump. You can only upgrade to 14.04 from 13.10 as it is the next release. Leapfrogging releases is not support nor is it advised.

If there is noting of value on the drive then simply tell the installer to use the entire drive and it will setup suitable partitions for you and wipe whatever disk setup and files are currently stored

To go from 13.10 to 20.04, the nuclear option is the only sensible option. Format the drive, fresh install.

Good point. If the computer has Ubuntu 13.10, it must be an older computer. It may work better with a lighter flavour.
