kindle fire to linux - can i put linux/ubuntu on a 1st gen kindle fire?

You are asking a lot. I think that you are asking to much. Questions?

1) What CPU does the Kindle have?
2) how much memory does it have?
3) Does Ubuntu have an image that will run on that CPU?

From the little research that I have just done I doubt that Ubuntu has a version that runs on this CPU and is still supported with security fixes.

I have a Fire 7 (2015), and I would be happy to get android OS on it, but its a slow device.
It has a "MediaTek MT8127 (32-bit quad-core)" CPU. Look here and see they are all 32-bit CPU.
Yours must be also.

You can put a linux subsystem on most Android systems using a chroot, but having a GUi isn't all that useable.

About 9 yrs ago, i loaded an ubuntu-flavor onto a high end tablet (at the time). To access the GUi, it ran a vnc-server and from android, i used a VNC client. The keyboard mapping was off for a few important keys and the entire thing was painfully slow.

Today, i have a Fire 8 HD 7th gen, which only got non-hardware hack root about 15 months ago. Mine is rooted and i've added some commonly needed CLi tools, but wouldn't bother with any gui.
