Seeking advice for purchasing external DVD writer

    Hi all,

    PC configure:-
    AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
    Motherboard ASUS PRIME X570-P/CSM X570,AM4 Socket,USB3.2,PCIe 4.0 M.2 ATX M/B
    RAM 32G
HD for OS - nvme pcie 3.0 SSD 1TB
HD for storage - WD 4TB
    OS - Ubuntu 18.04

I'm prepared to replace my old internal ASUS DVD writer with an external DVD writer, USB 3.0 interface preferred. The new device is only for working on my old stock of Video CDs and DVDs and music CDs as well.

After searching on Internet I found that all external DVD writers, without blu-ray, only working on USB 2.0 interface. Could any folk on the forum give me some suggestion? Thanks in advance.

    Regards

    Thanks for your advice.

    I'm now looking at following Buffalo external DVD writer;

    8x DVD Portable
    DVSM-PC58U2VB
    https://www.buffalotech.com/images/p...tation_DVD.pdf

But it supports USB 2.0 only NOT 3.0

If unable to get an USB3.0 external DVD writer (without blu-ray) I may consider to get an internet device.

    I'm now also looking at;

    ASUS DRW-24D5MT
    Interface SATA
    https://www.asus.com/Optical-Drives-Storage/DRW-24D5MT/
    Specification
    https://www.asus.com/Optical-Drives-...pecifications/

    Its price is rather cheap.

My purpose using this device is for treating my old stock of video CD/DVD and music CD, converting them to mp4 and mp3 files and after finish I suppose I don't need it any more.

Your comment will be appreciated. Thanks

For music CDs I won't convert all of them to mp3 files because I have a HI set playing music CD.

for ripping music cds i recommend windows media player, lossless format. the audio quality is simply mind blowing.

but the size of 1 song in lossless format will be 10 times the size of a 320kbps mp3, so you will need a lot of disk space.

    lossless tutorial :

    Hi,

Thanks for your advice and links.

I have a large stock of music CDs, almost 95% classical music - such as Opera, Symphony, Piano concerto, Violin concerto etc. I won't convert them to mp3 files.

I have a nice HiFi set for playing those music CDs:-
    Onkyo CD player
    Denon Amplifier
    Wharfedale pillar speakers
    Enery Sub-woofer

The HiFi set has served me for more than 10 year, still working strong without problem.

Actually I only need the DVD writer to convert the video CDs/DVDs to mp4 files. After finish I'll shelve the device. I'll take your advice purchasing Buffalo external DVD writer, DVSM-PC58U2VB

    Thanks

Re: Seeking advice for purchasing external DVD writer

For DVD material the difference between usb3 & 2 would be nil as your 'bottleneck' will be the read speed of the drive.
For an external drive you'll get an effective rate of 4-8x which is well within the range of usb2 data transfer in practice.
Internal sata dvd drives can consistently read much faster on desktop hardware, laptop dvd drives are best case only minimally better than good external ones, in many cases the same or even worse..
