Looking at my installation of Gkrellm it has a battery configuration but then I don't have a battery/laptop.
Gkrellm shows a host of measurements in a sticky popup.
This laptop had Fedora 31 on it, and it showed current left in amps. Now with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS it does not show that. So the culprit is software configuration. I'm trying to find out what to do about it.
Maybe you have wrong flavor of *buntu installed.
I do not have a laptop, but Xubuntu 20.04 XFCE Power Manager displays the current charge % of my wireless keyboard.
My spouse has a laptop that I will boot into to see if it shows there; I will post results here in an update.
Update:
I booted into Xubuntu 20.04 on my spouse' laptop. It clearly shows state of battery; see attachment
