    How do I check my UEFI version using Ubuntu?

    I want to determine if a friend's PC is UEFI v.2+, that is UEFI version 2 or higher in order to make thumbdrive for installing Windows OS on a new SSD. I am presently running Xubuntu 18.04 LTS as a live boot with persistence from a USB. Other than that the PC is presently inoperable with a new SSD that is blank and awaiting an OS installation.

    This website https://www.pcsuggest.com/check-bios-uefi-motherboard-info-in-linux/ touts the use of the dmidecode terminal command with various filters as an approach.

    Does anybody know for sure?

    Most systems need UEFI update and SSD firmware update.
    Then it should work.

    If it has UEFI, it should be UEFI v2+. I think that was required to install Windows 8 back in 2012 and all newer systems are at least that up to date. It was Apple Mac that was EFI which was renumbered to UEFI v1 something.

    The output with the unfiltered terminal command dmidecode is below under my initial. After searching the output below the only reference I can find to UEFI or EFI is "UEFI is supported" under
    BIOS Information. The Vendor is American Megatrends Inc. and the Version is P08KRM.060.130812.J and the Release Date is 08/12/2013 .

    The release date for UEFI Version 2.0 was apparently January of 2006, see https://uefi.org/specifications


    QUESTION: Do you or anybody else have any more information to add to the question as to whether the UEFI is v2+ or not?

    The term "firmware" "extensible" "interface" are not found in the search. The term "unified" is found but does not seem to be related to UEFI or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface.

    If system came with Windows 8 or newer then it has to be UEFI 2.x.

    I think it was 2.3 by the time Windows 8 was released.

    Do not know way to get actual UEFI version used to create UEFI/BIOS. Each vendor uses standard, but not all implement it in the same way. And they really only test that it works with Windows.

    Thanks Fred,

    I agree the UEFI must be higher than version 2 given the respective release dates of the BIOS and the version 2 UEFI given in my previous post. Just for other people's general information, there is a terminal command that recovers the Windows 8 product key. It worked for me today on my friend's Samsung DP500A2D with Xubuntu 18.04 LTS liveboot with persistence on a thumbdrive. The terminal command is:
    sudo strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

    I got results like below, wherein each character of the 25 character Product Key is replaced with #.

    ACPI
    #####-#####-#####-#####-#####

    You do not really need the license key.
    When you install Windows in UEFI mode to a system that had Windows the key is in the UEFI and automatically used.

    Yes, as always Fred, you are correct. I did the install the other day and everything went fine. I did not need the Windows 8 Product key, it was entered automatically. But I thought that may have been because we signed into my friend's Microsoft account during the installation process. We almost were not able to do this, because he did not know the password.
