    No and no...

If you can find a still functional internal diskette drive and a motherboard supporting it then then that covers the possibility I've mentioned above. But it won't recover damaged diskettes, obviously. I/O errors means either not compatible or failled, unrecoverable, period.

Out of curiosity (since I still have some very old 8 inch floppies) I searched around.

You could look around for a local computer museum.

I still have a very old Compaq laptop in a shed.

    Re: SFW file type

    Two cents worth....
Cleaned out my basement recently. Donated to Goodwill: one each Iomega Zip drive, several 100MB and 250MB disks for Zip drive; several mint-like 3.5 inch diskettes. Gave away the 3.5 inch disk drive a couple of years ago.
Built a new system last month without CD/DVD RW drive; although, I still have one in an older system. Nothing lasts forever; progress continues relentlessly; the bits on magnetic media will fade eventually.
It is time for the obsolete hardware to go after backing up files worth keeping.
    Cheers,

    Re: SFW file type

According to expert on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5MkWtQwx-s that dragonfly41 posted: The magnetic media lasts a very long time and can be recovered???? ....I am thinking he must be referring to some way to read the diskettes with out actually mounting or opening them. The diskettes are pristine and there is NO damage. They have been sitting in an inside the home closet for probably 20 years. I am using https://www.amazon.com/Teac-Corp-Flo.../dp/B0007VE044. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Re: SFW file type

I have ordered another 1.44 floppy reader from another manufacturer to try that. Also, I seem to remember an Ubuntu program I ran from the terminal that would scan any media and recover files. I remember using it to recover pictures on an old camera and usb drive. But it was five/ten years ago but I can't remember what I did and the program name. Does anyone have any suggestions along that line of thinking? Thanks!
