Re: How to install the Mpeg-4 and H.264 decoders? [Pop OS]

On Linux, codecs aren't installed like on Windows.

Decoder? mpv or vlc? Maybe look for media players.

Those are players with the codecs for anything you should want to see built in.
mpv has a GUI front-end - sorry, don't know the name, I've never used it.

If you want to do something else besides viewing the video files, something like ffmepg or handbrake will do most things.

If you want to cut and recreate different content, then almost any video editor can do that. Openshot is one.

If you just want to cut parts of existing videos, avidemux or vidcutter are worth a look. I've been using vidcutter from an appimage package. The snap and PPA installs both failed.

Pretty much every non-commercial video product in the world uses ffmepg code. Whenever you see "FREE" or $20 programs hyped to convert any video to some other format, they've just made a little GUI as a front-end to ffmepg.

Thank you for such a very complete reply TheFu
I initially got confused and thought the message meant "codecs", but it actually meant decoders. So yeah, the good ol VLC did it

Thanks for sharing, the bottom line of text was interesting.

I thought the idea was to install the missing Mpeg-4 and H.264 software to the default Videos app in Pop OS.
Well, I'm sure VLC is more capable anyway...
