New printer on Ubuntu 16.04 will scan, but will give error message when try print

I had to revert to an older, but working printer. I have CUPS and XSANE installed and the other printer worked fine. Both printers show and the one now installed is listed as the default. However, I think the problem likely stems from a constant warning I see on the internet that there is a file somewhere that 'overrules' what is the default printer. I have searched high and low for this file and in all the many locations I have been told it would be, it is not to be found. If found, there is also no instruction of how exactly to change it - I would guess to remove name of old printer and put in name of new - but sometimes the name is the model number, sometimes a model group and sometimes the brand and model/model group.

So, if I send a file to be printed I sometimes get nothing and sometimes an error message that it cannot connect to printer. The computer is still looking for the old printer most likely even though elsewhere [like on the print page] it shows correctly this printer and that print driver was [I'm almost sure] installed correctly.

Any ideas? This must be fixable.....if only I knew how.

Thanks much. It is scanning fine...but not using the Xsane program, which I'd prefer to use [that has the old printer name listed and I don't know how to change it]

It is quite an achievement to post such detail and not mention the printer make and model.

    Well crazybear,
You have not provided much information about your system, your multi-function(?) printer models, specific error messages, nor connections between your system and printer/scanner.
Please show the results between the Code tags....
    Code:
    inxi -Fxz
    lsusb
    scanimage -L
    apt list hplip
Drivers for new printer/scanner? Did you install the drivers? Where did you get the drivers from?
What have you accomplished to delete your old printer from CUPS configuration? The CUPS configuration utility can be found by Settings>Printers or from a terminal command line system-config-printer

This may apply to you https://askubuntu.com/questions/1084...by-simple-scan if you happen to own a Canon device.

Re: New printer on Ubuntu 16.04 will scan, but will give error message when try print

Easy there guys and gals!......I was locked out of my flat by a rabid and illegal landlord.....my computer [and everything else seized inside.....homeless for some months and now barely back to life....with older stored equitment.]

Actually, this printer was installed on the system earlier and worked fine; later a newer printer [still seized, so not available]. The driver was still installed and it is an Ubuntu driver. Ancient Canon MP 540 is what I have to use until the Court battles.....months away in this country. In some places it lists this printer as the default now; other places it seems to be a hidden file [I forget the name now] that overrides what the default printer is, and still must have the newer [seized] one listed. That is what I think the problem is...[although not 100% sure]. How to find and change that override file....... It will print a test page from printers in system settings, but not print any document or photo, etc.

    Sorry if I seem disorganized...my life is.....sorry.

    Issue the command
    Code:
    lpinfo -m | grep MP540
in a terminal. Post what you get.

There you are. Three PPDs. Yours might be the first one to use for printing. Use whatever you want to set up the print queue. The CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631, perhaps.

Great! Seems to be working somewhat. I think it just needs ink at this point....so will fill and find out. Seems to be going through motions of printing and scanning. There are two instances of this printer, but I don't see an option for deleting one. Perhaps it is not necessary.

Re: New printer on Ubuntu 16.04 will scan, but will give error message when try print

OK, you all helped some...but the system is still with faults and I still need help!
As I mentioned there is an override file and that caused GREAT problems. If I just print a document, it defaults to the printer that is not on the system now. Also, if I open a terminal and try to clear the print queue, it only will do so for that printer that is not there...
....so just now I can not print because of a problem I could fix if I could clear the print file of the printer actually on my system. I'd like to also correct that file that overrides the default printer. This problem has come up over and over...sometimes i can manually correct. Now, I can not - or do not know how to. Thanks.
