    Dell G7 7588 upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04

    Hi all,

I tried dual booting with 18.04, and I got stuck in driver hell. Fans not working, video cards not working, extended display not working, etc. I replaced 18.04 with 16.04, and everything works great, no driver issues, no fan issues. I was wondering if I was going to run into driver hell again if I update from 16.04 to 18.04.

    Re: Dell G7 7588 upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04

Install a newer release like 19.10 that can be easily update to 20.04 LTS.
Make sure installation is in UEFI mode.
Install the Nvidia drivers as recommended in Additional drivers. If it doesn't boot to the desktop with the default open-source driver, add 'nomodeset' to the boot parameters and then install the Nvidia drivers.

If further troubleshooting is required, including transitioning from Unity to the current Gnome DE, it should be done from an up-to-date OS, not form something like 16.04 (support ends in 2021).

    Apologies, I explained myself poorly.
Can i circumvent driver issues if i use update-manager-core to do a release upgrade?

If you installed a proper version in 19.10 it should be still in use after release upgrading.

    Why 19.10 instead of 18.04?

Because new hardware is best supported by new software.
Bringing old hardware back to life. About problems due to upgrading.
