My knowledge of Linux / Ubuntu is somewhat limited, so I will apologize in advance for getting some of the below terminology wrong.
To begin with, I recently began experiencing a problem in which my PC would reboot two or three time during POST, and after some expermintation, I was able to determine that my PCI Express video card was at fault.
I removed my video card and plugged my monitor cable into the onboard VGA port built onto my mother board, changed settings in BIOS, and the rebooting problem during POST went away. However, as Ubuntu is booting, Plasma no longer loads, and I’m simply left with a black screen which I cannot do anything with.
I’m assuming that my installation of Ubuntu is still looking for my old PCI Express card which I removed, and that it doesn’t know to utilize the built in on board video until changes are made in its settings?
However, if I reboot my computer I’m able to get to the menu which contains an option for Generic Recovery Mode, and from there I can get to the Root prompt, but I don’t know what to do here.
I remember playing around with Red Hat Linux about twenty years ago, and back then I remember that there was a command called “./Xconfigurator” which would allow a user to make changes to their system in case X Windows did not load.
I guess my question is, Is there any utility I can launch at the Root command prompt which will allow me to make changes to my settings so that the system will use my onboard video instead of the now missing PCI Express card?
As I said, I’m pretty sure that my video card was the cause of my initial rebooting problems, because since I’ve removed it the rebooting problems have gone away. Also, I appreciate everyone’s paitence given the fact that I’m probably not using the correct Linux terminology when trying to describe my problems. - Any info greatly appreciated. (Also, if I boot my system using an Ubuntu DVD, the graphical user interface seems to load fine.)
