Login screen black after Nvidia installation

    Hello,

I tried to update from 16.04 to 18.04 lately and ran into similar problems as I am having now. I tried to solve it with a clean 18.04 Installation, but it did not help.

The clean install with Nouveau driver does start correctly, but does not restart after suspending the computer. I read that this might be solved by using the Nvidia driver, I wanted to use anyway. After installing the computer did not start and I had to change to UEFI insecure boot and set boot options in /etc/default/grub to
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= "nomodeset"
At this point the computer got stuck in the loading screen at
Started user manager for UID 121

I used the recovery mode to install lightdm and switched to lightdm it using
    Sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
At this point the computer starts and hear the Ubuntu starting sound, but the screen is black. I can switch to tty and login. Checking the status of lightm using
    Systemctl status lightdm
    Shows
    ● lightdm.service - Light Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.service; indirect; vendor preset: enabled)

Jan 04 13:47:58 DeepThought lightdm[1126]: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "marius"
Restarting lightdm does not work. I realised that I don't have a lightm.conf file at this point, so I created one with minimal Information:
    Greeter-session =lightdm-slick-greeter
    User-session = Ubuntu
    I hope that is correct.

I can start my computer normally by purging the Nvidia driver and restaring the system, working with gdm3 and lightdm.
The lightdm status is then similar but with additional line:
lightdm[xxxx]: pam_unix(lightdm:session) : session opened for user marius by (uid=0)
lightdm[yyyy]: Failed to write utmpx: No such file or directory
I tried with different versions of the Nvidia driver, same result. I am using an Inspiron 15 7000 with i5 processor and GeForce 940MX.

Please let me know if you need more Information. It would be nice if you could explain some backgrounds for me to understand what is going on ( or just add some links).

    Thanks,

    Marius

Where are you getting the drivers from?

    Hey thanks for your answer.

I tried Software & Updates integrated in Ubuntu and the Nvidia ppa using the terminal. It does not make a difference.

Re: Login screen black after Nvidia installation

    marius22; Welcome to the forum

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= "nomodeset"
defeats Kernel Mode Setting, thus, the driver will not be able to load. Remove the boot parameter and reboot, Now what results ?

-my bit to try and help-

However, these are the same FAILED as without the NVIDIA driver. I noted that there is no log of an NVIDIA driver (except the NVIDIA persistance daemon, whatever that is )

How do you attach files to avoid these long entries?

    Thank you!

Re: Login screen black after Nvidia installation

Restarting lightdm does not work. I realised that I don't have a lightm.conf file at this point, so I created one with minimal Information:
    Code:
    Greeter-session =lightdm-slick-greeter
    User-session = Ubuntu
    I hope that is correct.
    Is that the whole output?
    Where's the [Seat:*] ?

Also the user-session it should be all lower case, as far as I'm aware.

But you seem to have a lot of issues beyond the login screen issue.

How do you attach files to avoid these long entries?
For general output use code tags, and if really really long output, you can use pastebins such as ubuntu pastebin
Then just add a link to it.
Links are easier to deal with than attached files.
No one wants to download a file for someone else's problems.
    (I know I don't)

So I checked the LIghtDM and installed slick-greeter (Yep, I did not have it before...) . It created a new config file that contains all the basic stuff, also [Seat:*] now.
Unfortunately the problem remains when installing Nvidia driver.

Yep, but this is the most annoying for now.
