    Mir 1.6.0 Release

    Alan Griffiths (alan_g) announces the release of Mir 1.6.0, supporting all ubuntu versions via PPAs or source tarball. This release sports improved diagnostics and added tooling, a new “wayland” graphics platform, initial work on the dispmanx platform3 for Raspberry Pi, and fixes for Arch; As well as enhancements and bug fixes.

    GTK Apps Now Look MUCH Better on the KDE Plasma Desktop

    Joey Sneddon writes about problem theming with the various toolkits being used. Work reported by KDE dev Nate Graham means GTK header bars no longer look unruly on KDE Plasma. Joey reports on Nate's work, providing screendumps. The changes are incorporated in Kwin which will ship with Plasma 5.18 LTS affecting Xorg sessions.

    New GNOME Design Team Mockups: Extension Tool, Font Manager & Revamped Clock App

    Joey Sneddon tells us how GNOME works very much in the open, and how he keeps up to date on their work. Joey lets us in on new GNOME App Mockups, reminding us of what they may represent, but also what excites him.     Canonical Releases Major Kernel Security Update for Ubuntu 19.10 and 18.04 LTS

    Marius Nestor updates us on security fixes for Ubuntu 19.10, and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS telling us what is fixed by the patches. Fixes were made also to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (4.4 kernel) with detail provided. Users are urged to update their systems asap.

    Canonical Patches Intel Microcode Regression on Ubuntu PCs with Skylake CPUs

    Marius Nestor writes that a security advisory has been released by Canonical, in which Canonical apologizes for a regression introduced in an Intel microcode firmware update. Reminding us what the vulnerabilities were, the fix also introduced the regression impacting all releases; which can be fixed by installing intel-microcode 3.20191115 asap. Users are advised to update, then reboot their systems.

    Some Of The Possible Changes Coming For The Desktop With Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

    Michael Larabel discusses what the Ubuntu Desktop Trello board has talked about recently, which gives us clues of what we'll see in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. This includes continuing to improve GNOME desktop performance, work on fingerprint driver/support on behalf of an unnamed OEM, more work on ZFS, improving ubiquity's support of RAID arrays, and more.     Systemd-homed Looks Like It Will Merged Soon For systemd 245

    Michael Larabel gives an update on Systemd-homed functionalities; namely: migration of home directories, containment, and password/encryption handling. As well Lennart adds there is to be "lots of other fancy features". The code is presently under review and testing with the expectation of inclusion in systemd 245 for the Ubuntu 20.04 release.     Wine 5.0 Code Freeze To Begin Next Week

    Michael Larabel advises that Wine 5.0 enters code freeze for the next stable Wine release. Wine 5.0 features a number of Vulkan improvements, better LLVM MinGW support, DXTn compressed textures support, FAudio support, debugging improvements, and other fixes and improvements. Release is likely early next year.

    Canonical Announces Ubuntu AWS Rolling Linux Kernel for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS AMIs

    Marius Nestor tells us of a new rolling model for Ubuntu AWS kernels, where they'll get all security patches and performance tweaks as soon as available. It's included on new Ubuntu AWS images, or can be applied through provided commands.
