Open Infrastructure Summit Shanghai 2019: the highlights

Growing the Linux app Ecosystem at LAS 2019
Alan Pope tells us the third Linux Application Summit (LAS) in Barcelona is a joint effort by KDE and GNOME projects. Canonical, as a sponsor, sent a team to represent Ubuntu and Snapcraft. Alan had discussions with members of the organising committee: Aleix Pol of KDE, Sri Ramkrishna, and Nuritzi Sanchez, outlining what they said LAS means to them. If we couldn't be there, a youtube channel is provided which will have recordings.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Continuing To Work On Python 2 Removal
Michael Larabel reports on Canonical’s work of removing Python 2 for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa. He says that if Python 2 packages are not converted to Python 3, they will be deleted from the archives. He also acknowledges that software no longer maintained using Python 2 is a concern.

KDE Frameworks 5.64.0 Open-Source Software Suite Released with over 200 Changes
Marius Nestor reports that the KDE project releases KDE Frameworks 5.64.0 with 200 changes, including performance improvements, bug fixes, support for Qt 5.15, and more. He also reports that the new version of NetworkManagerQt is going to connect to WPA3 WiFi networks, and that it will be released on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa.

Canonical Announces Ubuntu Updates to Mitigate Latest Intel Vulnerabilities
Marius Nestor tells us Canonical have released updates for all supported releases to mitigate the latest Intel vulnerabilities. Listing some of the CVEs patched, it includes discussion with Alex Murray of Canonical on the TSX Asynchronous Abort which impacts some intel processors. Here's KDE Plasma Mobile Running on the PinePhone Open Source Linux Smartphone
Marius Nestor reports that Bhushan Shah has the latest KDE Plasma Mobile running on the PINE64, on top of the recommended KDE neon interface. Available for preorder now, it is expected that the PinePhone will ship through December, 2019 and January, 2020 with mass production in early March.

Canonical Donates More Ubuntu Phones to UBports and You Can Get One Right Now
Marius Nestor reports that Canonical have donated several touch devices to UBports. UBports will pass them on to those who offer to join the Ubuntu Phone movement and contribute to the development of Ubuntu Touch. A tweet link is provided for those wishing to apply and Marius admonishes to hurry as "you might get an Ubuntu Phone for free."
