Hi,
I did a new install of Ubuntu 18.04 from a DVD on an empty partition in my hard drive. Previously, the empty partition had Windows and it also had Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04.
This is what fdisk shows:
| partition 1 | partition 2 | partition 4 | -----extended partition 3------ |
|-------------|------------ |-------------|partition 5 | partition 6 (swap) |
Ubuntu 12.04 is in partition 5. Windows used to be in partition 1+2+4. Carved out partition 4 for Ubuntu 14.04.
I have tried using both partition 1 and partition 2 for installing Ubuntu 18.04.
After install I can't login, I am stuck at booting, which seems to be a repeat cycling of the messages "failed to start network manager", "failed to start login service", "failed to start system logging service" and "failed to start GNOME display manager".
From the GRUB menu I can still login to Ubuntu 12.04, but for Ubuntu 14.04 it just shows a blank screen. I have no connection to a network.
