In my case using send as email does not do anything in TB: no new message and therefore no attachment. That is why I thought I might pick up an error in the logs.

Have you specified Thunderbird as the default mail program in the operating system? Take a look in System Settings.

Robbyx, try launching libreoffice via terminal and going through the process. We may get a workable error out of it.

What happens if you right click the doc in file manager? Do you then get an option to send by email in any way?

I'm not on my Xubuntu system at the moment but I seem to remember that is an option in my system, though it may simply be my memory that's playing tricks on me.

I have searched in Synaptic and note of options for Java Runtime Environment are installed. Which version should I choose?

Yes there is the option and it does open TB and show an email with the file attached. I used pcmanfm to do it.

You also may need to go into the Libreoffice ->Tools ->Options ->Libreoffice ->Advanced and make sure that your version of java is enabled; just having it installed on the system may not be sufficient for Libreoffice to use the send-mail system.

I now have the JRE installed but still the send does not work.

    java -version
    openjdk version "11.0.4" 2019-07-16
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.4+11-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu218.04.3)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.4+11-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu218.04.3, mixed mode, sharing)
Please suggest how to repair this latest error on terminal startup

Re: Sending documents from Libreoffice to Thunderbird pop3 (ubuntu 18.04)

Having now looked at my Libreoffice settings I wonder if your problem is related to java as it is disabled in my LO settings but I can send mail from the LO File menu without a problem.

I'm not sure where to look further but will see what else I can find.
