Missing text with icons, menu items, buttons and text boxes

I am using Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS with Unity on an Intel desktop PC. Kernel version is 4.4.0-166-generic.

When the desktop wakes up from a previous suspend, the text with icons and menu items vanishes completely. The icons work, but icon text is missing, and also within the application menus and buttons. The text typed into text boxes also does not appear on the screen, but is accepted by the system. After logging out (by blindly clicking the menu option in the familiar location on the screen), and after logging in again, the desktop returns to normal.

A snapshot of the blanked out desktop is attached.

This doesn't seem to happen for every suspend/wakeup instance, but have noticed it happening often now.
Have been using 16.04 for many years. It was normal most of the time. The problem appears to have started in the last few months.

Would appreciate any pointers to a solution. Thanks.
