I'm not trying to uninstall/remove need to learn to add to the desktop. only thing on it since installation is trash icon.

NOTE: I'm not good with program coding similar to command prompt from windows.

You didn't say what version of 'buntu you installed, so this is a generic answer. Somewhere, there is a program installed already called Software. Click on that icon and it will show you all of the free programs that 'buntu has to offer.

Re: Trying to learn about desktop

If you're using Gnome (the default Ubuntu desktop environment) they've taken away the ability to have launchers on the Desktop.

In other desktop environments you can generally just drag and drop launchers from the menu to the Desktop, or the panel, or wherever.

They're just text files, with a .desktop extension, that specify the command that will be run, and the icon to be displayed, and so on.

Ubuntu's dfault Desktop might not be what you want if you want a traditional desktop experience.
    But no worries.
Ubuntu has a family of variants called flavors, which use different desktops.

Adding .desktop files can be done in Ubuntu-Gnome, but...

If you wish to start out with something less confusing and IMO a lot more user friendly I would suggest Ubuntu-MATE.

UbuntuHandbook is a very good reference.

Searching on line can lead you in the wrong direction. It would be better to ask here in our forums before trying anything you find online.
