UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

    Hello everybody,
Hello to 1fallen, if he's still working here.

As usually, unfortunately, I have problems in upgrading from an Ubuntu release to the next one. This time it's quite strange.

    1. My computer is a laptop connected to internet by a Vodafone router, all by cable.
    2. I usually do any update on the current release of Ubuntu without any problem. No network problems.
    3. Three days ago, after an update, Ubuntu popped up that there was an upgrade, from 19.04 to 19.10, as expected.
    4. I started the upgrade, and, arrive to disabling the third party sources without any problem.
    5. While "Setting new software channels" the upgrade stops with this pop-up:
    HTML Code:
    Error during update
A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.
    6. The program then restores the original system state.
    That's all.

Every time it the same thing.

    A couple of things more:
    a. I don't succeed in any moment of the upgrade activity to open the terminal view inside of the upgrade window.
    b. Since long time, if I run the software updater by myself, I receive an error pop-up:
    HTML Code:
    Failed to download repository information
        Check your internet connection.
I don't know if these additional information are useful or not.

I also performed the internet speed test on my computer, and the report is good:
    - Ping 9 ms
    - Download 81.15 Mbps
    - Upload 19.32 Mbps

I thank in advance anybody that will help me to find the solution and to upgrade mu Ubuntu from 19.04 to 19.10.

    Regards,

    Carlo

you said "as usually", so it is not something new

is your router using a proxy/vpn ? is your system using 'sudo' is it encrypted ? is journalctl logging something usefull about that issue ?

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

    Hi dino99,

I say "usually' since last three upgrades I had some problem, but different to this:
    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2417517
    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2376291

These are the answers to your questions:
    1. is your router using a proxy/vpn ?
    NO
    2. is your system using 'sudo' is it encrypted ?
    NO
    3. is journalctl logging something usefull about that issue ?
Frankly I have no idea about how to access to journalactl logging.

I have not a deep knowledge of Linux, despite I use it since about 8 years.
But I can tell you how DEC VAX VMS works
    Yes, I'm quite old...

    Thank you for your help,
    Regards,
    Carlo

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

    Hello,

The situation is the same as from the beginning.
I just want to add a slight deterioration:
When I click now on "Activities" the view of all the active applications appears a little bigger, so the last row is not completely visualized...

    Looking forward for any help,
    Thanking in anticipation,
    Kind regards,

    Carlo

    carlo-sanguineti; Ok - I pop in here

So You want to upgrade to 19.10 -
Lets start with the basics here:

    1) internet connectivity:
    Code:
    ping-c3 8.8.8.8
    ping -c3 google.com
    2) State of the package management system:
    Code:
    cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list
    tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*
    uname -r
    cat /proc/version
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt full-upgrade
From these we see where we jump to next

    all in the process

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

First, I'd get rid of all those entries in your sources.list that refer to distributions other than the one you are using. I'd also remove any PPAs and start with just the basic repositories that refer to your current distribution. Then you need to run "sudo apt dist-upgrade" on your current release version before trying to run do-release-upgrade. After you have a functioning system, you can start to add back the PPAs.

Or, perhaps a better solution is just to install 19.10 from scratch. Do you have a separate /home partition? Along with a separate /home, I have another partition where I can install new distro versions so I don't run into conflicts, and a separate /boot. If the new version works properly, I can edit the bootloader to use the new version by default.
If you ask for help, do not abandon your request. Please have the courtesy to check for responses and thank the people who helped you.

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

    Hello SeijiSensei
    Than you for your answer.
To to what you suggest me I had to be a better user of Linux / Ubuntu. If you like do help me, tell me in detail how to remove all the unnecessary entries and PPAs.

Secondly, I have a disk devoted only to the programs. where the directories are:
    bin
    boot
    cdrom
    core
    dev
    etc
    home
    initrd.img.old
    lib
    lib32
    lib64
    lost+found
    media
    mnt
    opt
    proc
    root
    run
    sbin
    snap
    srv
    sys
    tmp
    usr
    var
    vmlinuz
    vmlinuz.old

Nevertheless, I am absolutely not able to install Ubuntu from scratch. I never did with a Linux operating system in my life. I'm afraid to do something really bad...

    Thank you again,
    Regards,
    Carlo

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

Once again my old friend the PPA's are not a good way to go on a Version Up-grade.
First remove/purge all of the below PPA's from your source list.
    Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/caffeine-developers/ppa/ubuntu vivid main # main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/diesch/testing/ubuntu utopic main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/djcj/vlc-stable
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/flacon/ppa/ubuntu vivid main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/flacon/ppa/ubuntu vivid main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jd-team/jdownloader/ubuntu trusty main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mc3man/trusty-media/ubuntu vivid main
    deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free #Opera Browser
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/plushuang-tw/uget-stable/ubuntu yakkety main
    deb https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/drawers/ubuntu trusty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/rvm/smplayer/ubuntu artful main
    deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/starws-box/deadbeef-player/ubuntu vivid main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu yakkety main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu vivid main
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/master-daily/ubuntu trusty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/java/ubuntu utopic main
As you can see there are many many chance's for your up-grade to fail. Future reference before any OS version up-grade you'll need to get rid of the "Foreign" sources, to become pure ubuntu only sources.
After those have been purged/removed, then re-fresh your list:
    Code:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt dist-upgrade
If any errors appear, stop there and post back what was shown in the terminal.
Roll up your shirt sleeve's we could be here a while.
With realization of one's own potential and self-confidence in one's ability, one can build a better world.

Re: UNABLE TO UPGRADE: Network problem during upgrade to 19.10 (why?)

Hi, my old friend! Wasn't necessary to answer so promptly...
Thank you, really. know it was an effort from you. I'm touched and grateful.

I removed manually all the PPA you told me, and even someone was noted as "disabled on xyx upgrade" or something like this.
All garbage that I installed on the first years on Ubuntu. I didn't installed anything outside the Ubuntu Software application since your last successful intervention, but evidently it was not enough.

And... no errors! If you have time to waste here is the output to read... Now the machine asks me to restart. I will write again after it.

    Thank you really a lot,
    Carlo
