Howdy,
It seems you have to click the icon and start dragging right away or it opens the menu for the icon. Here's a screen record of me giving it a try.

The quick drag and drop works for everything except the trash icon which is the one I want to move.

I had to disable the experimental views via:
BTW: Nemo is what I use now in lieu of Nautilus.Code:gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences use-experimental-views false

To remove the trash icon, got to the software center and install gnome tweaks, then launch it, then click Extensions, then click the gear icon to the right of Desktop Icons, then you'll see the option to turn off the icon.
