    I don't see why xrandr did not work for setting resolution so guess I'm on the side till xorg log is posted.

    Re: Highest monitor resolution not available

    Do not use the drivers from the 'net. You are only asking for trouble if you do that.

    You said that the monitor is connected to the display port, but are there any adapters being used? Like display port to VGA, etc?

    The EDID info is missing. That's what tells xorg and xrandr which resolutions are possible. Without correct EDID, you'll need to get correct EDID from somewhere and tell the nvidia driver to use it. I've had to do this due to an Display Port -to- VGA adaptor failing to pass through the monitor EDID.

    In the xorg.conf, I added :
    Code:
        Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/xorg-monitor.dell-2412m.edid.raw"
    to the "device" section for the GPU.
    which was pulled from my dell monitor using a different computer which had no problem getting the raw EDID dumped and put it into that file above. The filename can be anything, but it must contain the binary EDID for the monitor.

    BTW, I don't have the same nvidia GPU that you have.

    @TheFu
    Thanks for the explanation. I have not crossed paths with EDID, guess I lead a bless life.

    I suspect that your monitor is not properly advertising the modes that it can do, although it's possible that the driver is rejecting the mode for some other reason. The log file will probably say either way. Your attempts to probe the monitor's EDID seem to support the idea that the monitor isn't responding as helpfully as it might.

    If it does turn out that your monitor isn't advertising properly, you can specify enough information in xorg.conf to allow the driver to pick the right resolution. HorizSync and VertRefresh are usually sufficient, which you can generally get from the monitor's specs.

    But it's best to establish that is what the issue is before you start poking at the config files. It's also generally a good idea to make sure that you're comfortable copying or editing text files from the command line before you poke it; misconfiguration means that you might temporarily end up with no graphical environment at all.

    The monitor is the INN X315. It says 'No modes were requested; the default mode "nvidia-auto-select"', so does that mean that the monitor is not stating its modes?

    There are no adapters. Just the display port cable. And it's definitely connected to the graphics card!

    OK, this part is unusual; the install scripts blacklist the nouveau module so that it never gets loaded in the first place. It's probably unrelated, but it could indicate that the driver didn't install as cleanly as it might have.

    Code:
     [    34.353] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 1

    I think that because that module gets unloaded again before mode validation, it doesn't affect things - nouveau by itself seems to be pretty bad at detecting resolutions - but it did strike me as out of place, particularly with this line:

    Code:
    [ 35.761] (II) GLX: Another vendor is already registered for screen 0
    Actually, strike that: the nouveau module doesn't get unloaded until after the modesetting happens; it could be affecting things.

    Code:
    [    35.588] (==) NVIDIA(0): No modes were requested; the default mode "nvidia-auto-select"
    [ 35.588] (==) NVIDIA(0): will be used as the requested mode.

    It's certainly not quite as helpful as it might have been. There is an xorg.conf option, ModeDebug, that makes the mode validation section of the log much more verbose. That will probably specify which modes come from where, and why they're accepted or rejected.

    The order of things that I would take in your situation is to first purge and reinstall the nvidia driver to give the install scripts a chance to blacklist all the right things. If the nouveau and vesa modules are messing up the mode detection, that might fix it without having to do anything else.

    If that doesn't do it, the next thing is to find out why the mode you want isn't being used. I think that you'll only need a snippet in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ to do it, rather than a full-blown xorg.conf, but the last time I needed to play with these things that wasn't an option. So you can create a file, let's call it /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf. In that, put
    Code:
    Section "Device"
        Option  "ModeDebug"     "True"
    EndSection
    and restart X or reboot.

    That should, hopefully, point to where the problem is in the log.

    There are lots of options to selectively use or ignore the information provided by EDID, in the case that it's mostly accurate. I had a monitor that just flat-out lied in its EDID when I was first starting out with Linux; that was fun. Your monitor manufacturer doesn't seem to be terribly forthcoming with the specifications of your monitor. The easy option is to specify HorizSync and VertRefresh and let everything else happen automatically, but the manufacturer doesn't provide those for your monitor on their website as far as I can find. It might be in your manual, or they might tell you if you ask them, or you might need to just make something up based on the specifications of similar monitors.

    Bear in mind what I said earlier about if it goes pear-shaped: from the command line (you can often get a virtual TTY with Ctrl-Alt-F2 when you've killed your graphical environment; the graphical environment is probably on Ctrl-Alt-F1, although it might be on -F7), rm will delete (remove) a file, and nano is an easy-ish command-line text editor. Booting from the install image is also a good way of fixing things when one's fiddling has removed the usual graphical environment.

    Re: Highest monitor resolution not available

    So interestingly, I booted up in Windows to double-check the resolution, and it also maxes out at 1920x1080 with no higher resolution options available. Now that I've looked at the specs more carefully, it looks like there is a Pro version with almost the same part number and a non-pro version, with both monitors being the same size. The non-pro only goes up to 1920x1080, which is what I guess I've got. There's nothing obviously written on the monitor other than the "PRISM+" logo. To make things more confusing, on my first day on the job here, my workmate specifically told me there might be a driver problem because the monitor can't do its max resolution in Ubuntu.

    I very much appreciate everyone's help here! Sorry it ended up being a waste of time
    When I buy my own hardware, I know what I'm getting!! It's so silly having a huge screen and then being stuck with a low resolution. My monitor at home is 22" and has the same resolution.

    Troubleshooting is good practice, and someone with a similar issue may come across the thread in the future and find the information helpful.

    I'm glad to hear you got your issue resolved, although it's a shame you didn't get the outcome you were hoping for.
