    Eoan Ermine (19.10) Final Freeze

    Adam Conrad of the Ubuntu release team reports that the next version of Ubuntu, the Eoan Ermine (19.10), has entered the Final Freeze period in preparation for the final release [this] week. With much anticipation, the current uploads in the queue will be reviewed and either accepted or rejected as appropriate by pre-freeze standards. Acceptance pertains to two broad categories: release-critical bugs, and bug fixes that would be suitable for post-release SRUs. We are asked if we have time to help test Ubuntu or our particular flavor while there's still time.

    Alan Griffiths (alan_g) announces Mir 1.5.0's release. We are told where to find the release in Mir’s PPAs or a tarball. Some major enhancements are touched on, as are bugs fixed and a listing of community contributions, with many links provided.

    Nate Graham tells us it's been a big week with many new features, bugfixes and performance improvements, and user interface improvements. The works focuses on Dolphin, Kate, System Settings UI improvements - such as new scale factors of 1.25x & 1.75x, and others. With some detail, screencaptures, and video, we are encouraged to come and help, even if you're not a programmer.

    Incremental present in GTK4

    Georges Stavracas talks of the compositor's regional rendering and tells how the Vulkan renderer in GTK4 utilizes VK_KHR_incremental_present function to only redraw parts of the window that actually change. Georges advises that the code has now been merged for GTK 4.

    Jim Salter tells us of the ZFS root support added to Ubuntu 19.10 builds. With many screendumps provided, we are given a quick intro to ZFS for newbies, before moving to more detail for those familiar with the topic. In a detailed report, we are reminded that whilst ZFS is stable, Ubuntu's ZFS-installer is still experimental and a great addition.

    Michael Larabel writes about the new ZFS support in Ubuntu's Ubiquity installer, made available on Ubuntu 19.10.     KDE + Qt 5.14 To Better Behave With Context Loss Around NVIDIA's Driver

    Michael Larabel tells us of a prior leakage/corruption condition, seen by some on waking their systems when using NVIDIA's driver, that is being addressed with KDE & Qt 5.14. Better handling of OpenGL content loss, and the use of a signal emitted by the NVIDIA driver to deal with it gracefully are mentioned, with a link to David Edmundson's blog post for more detail.

    Ubuntu Touch OTA-11 Now Available for Testing with Improved, Smarter Keyboard

    Marius Nestor informs us the UBports community have announced the availability of Ubuntu Touch OTA-11. Expected to include only minor fixes, it's more significant than anticipated with a Dvorak keyboard layout option, Morph browser now having page-specific zoom setting, push notifications, and more.     AMD Linux Driver Bringing BACO Support To Older Sea Islands / Volcanic Islands GPUs

    Michael Larabel writes that AMD have released improved open-source driver support for Sea Islands and Volcanic Islands generation of GPUs. BACO or Bus Active, Chip off allows the GPU to mostly turn off when idle, and will now work for Volcanic Island GPUs, and with some tweaking with Sea Islands too. Links are provided.
