    How to interpret disks utility “SMART data & self-tests” results?

    Is there any comprehensive explanation of what the statistics in the report mean? I know about the balloons in the report displays, but many of them raise more questions than they answer.

    I'm particularly puzzled by these questions. If you know answers please respond, even if you can't point me to a complete information source.

    • What does "n bad sectors" mean? (To me it means that sectors on the disk have been mapped out of use because reading and/or writing them caused errors. But I'm looking at a report that says "1 bad sector" and "reallocated sector count 0, reallocation count 0," which makes me wonder what "bad sectors" means to the disks tool.)
    • What do the columns of data past "Value" mean? They are Normalized, Threshold, Worst, Type, Updates, Assessment (that one seems self-explanatory).
    • What are the two different operating temperatures reported (in this case "41 degrees C / 106 degrees C")?

    There is no standard. I've found that only the smartctl tool provides raw values for SMART data. None of the GUIs seem to.

    That's for a 6 month old SSD. The last column is all I watch. Any non-zero value for something that seems like a zero is needed is what I watch weekly.

    Every HDD model has slightly different meanings for each of the reported lines, even within the same vendor's disks. The best guess explanations come from google searches. I vaguely remember finding some explanations at a data recovery website.

    The drive is looks fine, but a bad cable is the issue and causing it to be a little slower due to error correction.
