If it will only be used with Linux machines, then ext4 is the best choice. If you want to share the device with Windows machines, NTFS is probably the best choice.

Thanks for the quick reply.
What I always do on my big hard drives is to make additional small partitions.
Those can then be formatted with various files systems and be very useful
for testing or repairing the main one.
