Cannot get lock for updates

When I run this

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Next time it happens perhaps check top and see if apt or dpkg or even unattended-upgrades is running.
If anyone of those is running then it can cause it to lock.

Maybe remove and purge, then let the package manger install it.
Example:

sudo apt remove --purge geary

Now run your update upgrade command again.
Either way the maintainer should be made aware of this.
