Well I have overcome the problem....NOT fixed but I tried several times to reinstall ubuntu 16.04 including the format all partitions way.
Nothing different happened, it still came up with the same screen, same programs, same problem.
I took the 2TB hdd and hurled it as far as I could. Purchased a new 2TB drive, installed yet again and problem solved along with all programs, naturally.
I have no idea why a hdd could do such silly things but there it is.
Thank you to all who helped with this problem, I appreciate your efforts.
