I use it and really like it. Gnome's steady removal of configurability was starting to grate. Everything worked out of the box for me.
Just install Kubuntu:

Yep, Kubuntu. And I'd suggest trying the "Minimal installation" option when you get to that point of the installer.
Kubuntu users, I already have Ubuntu installed. So to use Kubuntu do I have to re-install the O/S?

Don't mind me, I'm only passing through.
Once in a blue moon, I'm actually helpful.
I did this on Xubuntu. You DON'T have to reinstall an OS, just use your preferred software installer tool and look for "kde"-named packages instead of "kubuntu"-named packages. On my Xubuntu 18.04, "kde-standard" or "kde-plasma-desktop" worked without removing or corrupting (much) my XFCE4 gui.
You can always take Kubuntu for a test drive by booting from a Kubuntu installation medium and choosing Try Ubuntu. Alternatively, install VirtualBox, then install Kubuntu into a virtual machine.
