First thing to check is the graphical session you are logging into.
Session selection is available after inputting your login name.

If you mess up, you can reset a lot of settings by running a dconf command.
Login to the console as you did previously at the greeter and run....
    Code:
    dconf reset -f /org/gnome/
Also if/when you can login in to a graphical session you can use gnome-tweaks to reset settings or disable shell extensions.

The only session left was ubuntu. The dconf reset would have been really handy. Ran across Gnome-flashback-session(in standard repo). It seems to have gotten me to about 90% of where I want to be.Unfortunately when it rains it pours. Lost internet last night. It is not unusual with my ISP, so I just shrugged it off. A couple of hours later a neighbour said his was up. Huh-mm. Could ping the router but not connect. Turns out that my NAS, which has had the same static IP for 3-4 years, up and decided it had to have an address that was assigned to another device and was pretty persistent about it. Enough so that it locked/overloaded/whatever the router. That took a few hours to track down and straighten out. At least the router was not fried. Edit: This reformatting of posts is a PITA.
