MATE, which is lightweight (<500MB at idle after bootup), and is very easy to learn and configure. It's the desktop I fell in love with back with Ubuntu 8.04, which turned into the despised Unity desktop, at least by me.

Unity was not adopted by any other distro, BTW.

Burn an Ubuntu MATE live session, and see how configurable it is, usng MATE Tweak.

I drink my Ubuntu black, no sugar.

If we're talking of DEs, this thread is probably going to end up as a "recurring discussion" thread, nevertheless I will add my 2 pennyworth and say that I think Xfce4 (as in Xubuntu) is certainly a minimal DE, even more configurable in my opinion than Mate, and without adding any tweak package.

I'm not going anywhere. I love these forums and will keep logging in most every day. After all, I do know a lot more about Debian-based distros than Arch-based, and I love to encourage the n00bs to keep asking questions after I am able to supply an answer or advice.
